Working Families

The health of the community is one of the greatest concerns to Rep. Berrios and that is why she has supported several different bills in regards to health care for all family members. Some of the bills she supported in 2007 are as follows Senate Bill 654, 7% tax cap, House Bill 204, Senate Bill 77, and House Bill 147.

GROWING A HEALTHY COMMUNITY
Diabetes is affecting our communities and children today more than ever before. Senate Bill 654 is a public health initiative that is specifically geared towards lowering the rate of Diabetes. This bill creates the Diabetes Initiative Act that assigns the Department of Human Services to create a proposal by 2010 by which the rate of Diabetes can be lowered in the state of Illinois.

FIGHTING TAX HIKES
In 2007 Rep. Berrios was proud to support the renewal of the 7% assessment cap so that property tax bills do not rise so high that they push residents out of their homes. I also support "acquisition based assessing" which would ensure that assessments cannot go up by more than 2% a year until a property is sold. Homeowners would NEVER see assessment increases over this amount because the assessment would not be affected by the price a neighbor gets when he or she sells property. The Tax Reform Action Coalition is a key proponent of bringing this fairer taxation model to the Northwest Side.

DEALING WITH MEN’S HEALTH
Men’s health issues are currently not concentrated on as much as they should be therefore, Rep. Berrios supported a bill that will help focus on men’s health problems. House Bill 204 amends the Department of Public Health Powers and Duties Law of Civil Administrative Code of Illinois. This amendment will call for the department to assign a staff member to handle men’s health issues. This initiative will begin to put forth more attention to men’s health problems which is currently an issue that is insufficiently attended.

PUSHING BACK PENALTIES
Difficult times call for different measures. Representative Berrios knows that sometimes we all need a little help, that’s why she has been working on Senate Bill 77 a bill that amends the Property Tax Code. It gives way to the county board to adopt a resolution that would waive an interest penalty for the delinquent payment of taxes with respect to properties that qualify as brownfield sites.

WOMEN’S PREVENTATIVE HEALTH
As a woman Rep. Berrios understands how important it is to receive the proper health exams. She sponsored House Bill 147 a bill that amends the Illinois Insurance Code, the Health Maintenance Organization Act, and the Voluntary Health Services Plans Act. This bill provides that every insurer shall provide for Illinois residents coverage for a complete and thorough physical examination of the breast for the purpose of early detection and prevention of breast cancer.
